STAND UP FOR KIDS / SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM

"The mission of StandUp For Kids is to help homeless and street kids. We do this, every day, in cities across America. We carry out our mission through our volunteers who go to the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Our focus goes beyond street outreach and extends to deterrence and resource programs that we provide in schools and via the internet. But all facets of our mission are guided by the mandate that our volunteers shall tell kids they care about them and then, at every point, prove it."

The SWITCHFOOT BRO-AM is an annual event that was started in 2004 by the band Switchfoot to raise awareness and funds for the local chapters of Stand Up For Kids. The event is held every year at Moonlight beach in Encinitas, CA and includes a surf contest, live concert performance, a ton of great vendors and supporters.  There is also an Auction Event held the night before which helps raise additional funds.  For more information on the Broam please

DEAR JACK FOUNDATION

Founded by Andrew McMahon of the bands Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate after a diagnosis and battle with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia, The Dear Jack Foundation’s mission is to be the leader in raising awareness and supporting organizations and charities with the greatest need and highest potential for impact on young adult cancer patients. DJF specifically aim to find treatments as well as expand on quality of life initiatives, such as counseling for young adult patients and their families. This age group of 15 to 35 year old patients is in desperate need of research. Cancer is the number one disease killer of young adults and studies continually show that the survival rate has not improved as steadily as that of other age groups.

Some of the foundations the Dear Jack Foundation has supported include: the UCLA stem cell transplant program (a program on the cutting edge of cures through transplantation), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.  For more information: www. http://www.dearjackfoundation.com/foundation

PANCREATIC CANCER ACTION NETWORK

The organization raises money for direct private funding of research—and advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.  For more information: www.pancan.org

HELPING OUR FRIENDS

JAMES LILES – BAKERSFIELD, CA

James Liles was a student-athlete that was always conditioning and preparing himself for his next game of football.  His daily regime included 2-3 workouts a day and maintaining his grades as a High School Freshman.  This past season James played as a defensive end and back up kicker for the Liberty Patriots and was well known for sacking the opponent’s quarterback.  AS A 6’0, 172 pounds 14 yr old, he was on the road to a bright future in football.

On March 28th, 2008, with no foresight but a pain in his side, James was diagnosed with a stage 4 children’s cancer called Neuroblastoma.  Nearly 90% of Neuroblastoma cases are diagnosed by the age of 5 and only 2% of cases are diagnosed over the age of 10.  James’ treatment plan will take approximately 16 months and includes:

These past 12 months have proven to be a difficult battle for James and his family, facing chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplants, and numerous, surgeries.   James lost a kidney due to failure after a surgery to treat the cancer.  It has been very trying but he and his family are remaining positive.

In February 2009, James was able to return to school for the first time in nearly a year and our prayers are with him and his family for his continued recovery and the opportunity to get to enjoy all the things other kids his age get to.

The Hurricane Olympic Committee is honored to support the family with financial help and most importantly thoughts and prayers.  For more information on James, please contact steff@believeinsomething.org.
